ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ 03 ਮਈ : ਅੱਜ ‘ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦਿਵਸ’ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ ‘ਤੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਵਿਜੈ ਇੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਗਲਾ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅੱਜ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਲਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸੱਤਾ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਅਤੇ ਧਮਕੀਆਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਸਿਹਤਮੰਦ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਉਹ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗੇ ਝੁਕਣ 5 ਤੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਅਦਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕਤੰਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਆਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨਿੱਖੜਵੇਂ ਰੂਪ 1 ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਅਕਸ ਖਾਮੀਆਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ; ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੀ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ‘ਤੇ ਉੱਠਿਆ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਸਵਾਲ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਦੀ ਅਖੰਡਤਾ ‘ਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਚੁਣੌਤੀਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਣਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਨੂੰ ਤੋੜਨ ਦੀ ਸਾਜ਼ਿਸ਼ ਰਚੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਅੱਜ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਦੌਰ ਦੇਖ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਲਾ ਘੁੱਟਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵੱਖੋ-ਵੱਖਰੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਤਹਿਤ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸੂਬਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਸਥਾਪਤ ਅਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਅਦਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਦਬਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰ ਬੰਦ ਕਰਨੇ ਹੋਣ, ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੀ ਹਕੀਕਤ ਦਿਖਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਪਰਚੇ (FIRs) ਦਰਜ ਕਰਨੇ ਹੋਣ ਜਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਲ੍ਹਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੱਕਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਖਾਤੇ ਬਲਾਕ ਕਰਵਾਉਣੇ ਹੋਣ।
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕ-ਪਾਸੜ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ। ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ‘ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ’ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਵਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਭੱਜਦੀ ਰਹੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਪੁਲਿਸ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸਨਿਕ ਅਮਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਰਸ਼ਿਪ ਦੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਇੱਕ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਕਤ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਮੀਡੀਆ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਦੀ ਰੀੜ ਦੀ ਹੱਡੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ, ਉਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਿੰਗਲਾ ਨੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ, ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੀ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਦਿਓ। ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਚੱਟਾਨ ਵਾਂਗ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਚਿਤਾਵਨੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਤਾਲੇ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਘਰਾਣਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਡਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ‘ਰੰਗਲਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ’ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਗਰੂਕ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਡਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਖ਼ਤਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਿੰਗਲਾ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਆਓ ਅੱਜ ਅੱਜ ਇਹ ਅਹਿਦ ਕਰੀਏ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰੀ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਨੂੰ 5 ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਬੰਰਕ ਰੱਖਾਂਗੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
An Attack on Media Freedom is an Attack on the Integrity of Democracy: Vijay Inder Singla
CHANDIGARH May 3 : On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, former cabinet minister Shri Vijay Inder Singla issued a statement today saluting the brave journalists who refuse to bow down to the oppression and threats of those in power. He stated that in a healthy democracy, the pressacts as a mirror, compelling the government to confront its true reflection, complete with all itsflaws. The independence of media houses and the sanctity of democracy are inextricably linked, he emphasized; any question raised against media freedom is a direct attack on the integrity of democracy itself.
Expressing deep concern over the mounting challenges faced by the journalistic fraternity, the senior leader noted that there is a deliberate conspiracy underway to shatter this mirror of truth in Punjab and across the nation. We are currently witnessing an era where calculated attempts are being made to strangle the voices that dare to ask questions. Highlighting the various weapons deployed to silence the truth, the statement pointed out a pattern of
suppression, whether it is the state government halting official advertisements to stifle the voices of established media houses in Punjab, registering fabricated FIRs against rural journalists who expose the ground reality, or the central government imprisoning reporters and blocking their social media accounts for bringing the truth to light during the farmers’protests.
It is vital for everyone to understand that a democracy cannot survive on one-sided conversations, the former minister further asserted. He remarked that no establishment can legitimately call itself a “government of the people” while constantly running away from the public’s questions. Transforming the police and administrative apparatus into tools of censorship is a glaring sign of a weakening democracy, not a display of strength. A government that truly trusts its own work does not fear scrutiny, nor does it hide behind the misuse of the law.
Calling the courage of the media fraternity the very backbone of democracy, he urged journalists to never let it weaken and assured them of his unwavering, rock-solid support. Standing shoulder to shoulder with the press, he pledged to back their rights, their continued independence, and their fight for true journalism. A progressive or ‘Rangla Punjab’, he warned, cannot be built upon the fragile foundations of locked media houses and intimidated journalists. He also appealed to the people of Punjab to remain vigilant, cautioning that if this pillar of a free press weakens, the entire democratic framework will be in grave danger.
In conclusion, the statement called upon everyone to take a pledge today to act as the guardians of truth and fiercely protect our hard-won freedoms, noting that without a truly free press, the promise of true justice remains impossible.
